Fall Term (04-1) Registration Procedures
Registration for the Fall Term (04-1) is approaching, and the department will again be conducting block registration sessions for our majors. In an effort to improve the overall advising and registration process, we have instituted a few changes for this year. Three of the most important changes are:- Seniors will have the opportunity to "pre-register" one day before actual registration begins, but non-seniors will not begin advising and registration until the actual beginning of open registration. Last term we had some issues with non-seniors pre-registering for courses that ended up being closed by the time the actual registration form was processed. We hope to avoid this problem this term by processing the registration forms the same day they are filled out.
- To better keep track of the number of remaining seats in our upper-level courses, vouchers will be used for the first 4 days of registration. A voucher will be produced for each available seat in our upper-level courses. As students are advised they will be given a voucher for each upper-level course that they wish to take. The students will then give the vouchers to Matt who will process their registration forms. When the vouchers run out for a section, the section is full. Note that the vouchers are only valid through Tuesday, March 18 - after that time registration for all courses is open and a voucher will not guarantee you a seat.
- To help you to better understand what you need, we are producing a "self-advising" sheet for CS majors. This sheet will be emailed to our CS Major list and also put onto the department Web site. Please read over this sheet very carefully so that you can determine what you may need and be better prepared for your block advising session. If you'd like a copy of your General Education Requirements status, please see Matt Wolfson and he will give it to you.
- Students will come to a block advising session, meet briefly with an advisor, and fill out a registration form for the Fall Term.
- For students pre-registering on Wednesday, March 12, the advisors will keep the registration forms and pass them on to Matt Wolfson, who will process them on Thursday, March 13
- For students registering on any other day, the student will take the forms to Matt, who will process them as they wait.
- Although the use of vouchers should eliminate problems with our CS courses, some of your other courses may be closed by the time you actually register. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you list at least one "second choice" option for your courses in case a course closes before your registration is processed. If there is a problem with your registration, Matt Wolfson will contact you by email - please make sure that Matt has your email address.
- We ask that you have a good idea of your course choices PRIOR to your block advising session. If you have detailed questions or concerns about your course selections or about your progress in general, please make an appointment to see Dr. Ramirez (ramirez@cs.pitt.edu) or Matt Wolfson (wolfson@cs.pitt.edu, 412-624-8492) before your block advising session. Also please carefully read over the "self-advising" sheet mentioned previously.
